Bye Bye Impact …

Sunshine Crest

Remember when I wrote my post about the launch of SUNSHINE?

OK, so you were all happy for me/us, however I could hear the odd murmur of discontent because we’d gone and used IMPACT as its font.

Look, I don’t know what you have against the most bold and proud of all fonts but there’s obviously some bad blood between you and I don’t mind admitting your comments hurt, they hurt alot.

Alright … alright … I’ll clarify that.

Your comments hurt ME … because if truth be told, every other bugger was cheering you on like mad people.

The fact is I like IMPACT …

Sure it might look a bit 1980’s and a bit aggressive … but it was the font of my first born – cynic – and like all good fathers, you hold on to that, even if it goes out of style.

However as a socialist, I had to bow down to the people’s voice [that and the fact M&C wanted it changed] so with a tear of regret, I allowed the guys to go off and create something new … something that had no trace of impact on it at all …

Sunshine

Yes I like it … I really like it … but I still feel the victim of a group assault.

Infact the only reason I decided not to report you to the Font Police is because the guys showed me how this new design could be incorporated into a company crest [the thing at the top of this post] – which is clever because pathetically that’s been something I’ve wanted since my HHCL days.

Yes I know it’s sad … yes I know it’ll never be used in our day-to-day stuff … yes I know it shows I have a massive insecurity complex … but having this piece of pompous designer wank lets me feel like I’m a member of Nottinghamshire royalty and given my family tree includes some peasant stable hands, that’s a big step in the right direction.

In all seriousness, there is meaning behind the logo/crest … infact it means stuff that is quite important to me/us … so rather than take the piss for our [or more correctly, ‘my’] moment of prima-donnaness [are you listening Marcus? 🙂 ]I ask you to celebrate the fact you’ve been able to wean me off IMPACT because alot of people have tried, but until now, everyone had failed.

Goodbye impact, here’s to whatever the hell you are. 🙂

Congrats Rob, in more ways than one.

Comment by Age

Perfectly put Age. Well done Robert but even more congratulations goes to us and the design team. 🙂

Comment by Pete

Whoever did your coat of arms knows you and your quirks very well. I look forward to adding yet another of your business cards to my collection.

Comment by Lee Hill

congratulations rob. i know how dear to your heart your beloved impact has been, but she was all wrong for you and leeching you of your true strength and creativity. this new one is so hot and see, she’s already proving to be part of the family – much more than that old impact slapper was anyway. 🙂

Comment by lauren

You have latin on your crest. Latin? I am scared and impressed at the same time but what does it mean? My guess is it says “this should be in impact” 🙂

Comment by Bazza

BTW I like it and I really like how the logo comes out from the crest. It’s total self indulgent wank but it’s your self indulgent wank.

Comment by Bazza

it would also look great on the back of a leather jacket – hells angle style, or a full back piece tattoo – (not sure whether that would be the ultimate act of self indulgent wankdom or an inspiring demonstration of commitment to a brand) must admire the positivity of the message as well..

Comment by Mr McG

No serious company is going to give you a cent so you better keep whoring yourself to keep your roof over your head. This is what is wrong with advertising people, you talk about business but everything screams you don’t know a thing.

Comment by Unapologetic Banker

Well Mr Too Frightened To Reveal Yourself …

If you’d like to contact me, I will happily give you the names and numbers of the amateur companies that we work with … I am sure people like Virgin, Schweppes, and NASA to name but a few will be happy to learn they are just 2-bit poxy companies compared to organisations like bankrupt banks and investment houses.

You can come here and rant as much as you like – I quite enjoy it and I certainly won’t censor it – but you’re not doing yourself or your industry any good in changing people’s attitudes towards an economic situation that whatever way you look at it, has you guys upfront and centre in terms of who should be blamed and who should be taking some sort of responsibility.

Now run along, you have creditors to pay …

Comment by Rob

Isn’t it funny that Mr. Anonymous Banker talks about getting “cents from serious companies” when in all truth, his whole world revolves around money that doesn’t even belong to him, let along exist as everyone is learning…

Ha, who’s the real fraud here, dip-shit?

Comment by Age

I like the latin.

Comment by Marcus

I liked the impact one better.

Comment by Seb

Nice. I like the crest.
Who let in the troll?

Comment by Rob Mortimer

I should love you for being an ‘impact lover’ like me Seb, but as your statement undermines my anti-impact therapy, I have to ignore you, ha!

And the latin means “good fortune for all” … which is a reflection of our socialistic capitalism philosophy – though Mr Banker wouldn’t understand that would he.

Comment by Rob

can’t we just ignore the banker type? we all know that he’s just a poor unfortunate, starved of love and without a dictionary or an original word to say. ‘no attention is better than no attention’ is just as bad for people as it is for brands…

and rob, please don’t get the whole crest as a tattoo – the filagree is too fine and will blur into an awful mess in a few years – but that latin could be incorporated into something..

Comment by lauren

I am very proud of my companies but even I wouldn’t mark my body with their bloody logos.

Billy on the other hand … 🙂

Comment by Rob

ugh. i meant ‘bad attention is better than no attention’… god – now who’s the poor unfortunate without a dictionary. *blush*

Comment by lauren

Added bonus: You can change Posterus to Posterius when someone talks out of the arse 😉

Comment by Rob Mortimer

Their arse… not a collective arse.

Comment by Rob Mortimer

Thank you for that Mr M … because it has added relevance to the opening slide of my preso at PSFK this Friday.

And with that, I’d better get on with writing it or George and Andy will never let me hear the end of it and it’s been a tough week with them already, ha!

Comment by Rob

Is there video of your lecturer bashing yet?

Comment by Rob Mortimer

for anyone new here, rob isn’t a violent skinhead who goes around bashing academics, that lecturer bashing refers to the colloquial expression ‘ear bashing’.. to speak ones mind, to give someone a lecture.

Comment by lauren

I have to chase that up Mr M … the organisers are being abit cagey, but it seemed to have made quite an impression in the ‘real world’ because I had an interview in the money section [go figure] of some Indian newspaper last week and have received about 100 emails of support since.

Madness … ha!

And thanks for being my interpretor there Lauren – though the fact you had to point out I’m NOT a thug sort of alarms me, ha!

[Thank God Andy is incommunicado or you’d have to do a lot more PRing on my behalf, ha!]

Comment by Rob

That’s WHY I liked the latin.

Comment by Marcus

hate it.

hate the roman empire

hate the communist/socialist party

love the company though + it’s raison d’être.

Comment by my brothers keeper

I’d rather that than you hate the company and our philosohy but like the logo, ha!

Comment by Rob

If a tatt of the logo is my fucking leaving present I’m leaving. Fuck that doesn’t work.

Comment by Billy Whizz

We’re not going to spend that much on you Billy 🙂

Comment by Rob

Am I supposed to be surprised? Why the fuck do you think I’m leaving?

Comment by Billy Whizz

I think the words ‘Jemma’, ‘Just’ and ‘Friends’ has something to do with it Billy. 🙂

Comment by Rob

But I love Billy. He’s like a brother to me.
Jemma x

Comment by Jemma King

Can’t we have that crest and the impact?
And every presentation chart could start with “Morituri te salutant” and end with “Ceterum censeo Landorem esse delendam”. I’m a right f#%$!ng bragger, am I?

Comment by Seb

You’re breaking everyones balls with that sort of talk Seb. You can keep up with the foreign shit but don’t big up the impact font. 🙂

Comment by Billy Whizz

You should stop playing hard to get Jem before it’s too late.

Comment by Billy Whizz

I guess Rob would love the last sentence. It reads:

“By the way I think that Landor must be destroyed.”

It’s a slightly changed saying by a Roman senator who finished every speech with this line. Only he did not refer to Landor but Carthago.

Comment by Seb

Seems like I got to New York just in time.

Comment by john

That’s not what NYC are saying Mr Dodds.

For the record, my Mum thinks our ‘crest’ is aggressive and almost Nazi like. It took me a good 10 minutes before I realised she didn’t mean this in a good way.

Saying that, if my 75 year old Mum did like it, I would have even more worries than having sexual fantasies about IMPACT.

Love you Mum …

Comment by Rob

And I bet your mum is a thousand times smarter than a lot of people you’re working with.
