The Musings Of An Opinionated Sod [Help Me Grow!]

What The Hell Happened To Flying?

So the above picture is a mock-up of what Pan Am planned as the economy interior of their first Boeing 747.

Look at it … it’s huuuuuuuuge.

Please note, this is not the ‘advertising’ version of their interior, this is literally what Pan Am expected their interiors to be.

Either they were utterly delusional, didn’t care about in-flight safety or they had kept their accountants out-of-the-loop and when they were finally allowed in and saw what they planned … they went mental and informed management that they’d make far more money if they packed the people in like this:

… and as we all know – where money is concerned – most companies will let it trump everything and anything, be it strategy to loyalty to moral judgement. Ooooh, I’m so political.

[Don’t worry Lee, I’m not expecting you’ll comment, I know you’re Mr Silent on matters like this]

Fortunately I am too engrossed in the Belgium/US match to comment on this Robert.

coward.

How unsurprising. Ha.

Comment by Rob

But the fares were eye-watering.

Comment by John

FYI – fares being the price regular people pay to fly on planes.

Comment by John

oh i wonder who the fuck youre talking about doddsy.

Comment by andy@cynic

They call him Mr. Freebie.

I pay for my flights thank-you-very-much. Sure, I pay with my shitload of points that have been gathered over the years thanks to generous benefactors, employers and clients … but I still [sort-of] pay. Oh yes. Ahem.

Excellent point John. Based on average household incomes, air travel has proportionately and consistently become more affordable over many decades. To the US fans among the commentators, my condolences. You put up a brave fight.

Comment by Lee Hill

Yes – well played. Though apparently a US commentator said Tim Howard’s was “the best performance by any player in any World Cup, ever, in history”.

Belgium is only famous for chocolate and pedophiles and they only invented chocolate to get to the kids.

i know where that came from. dont try and claim you fucking came up with it. you wouldnt even fucking know where belgium is with a neon fucking arrow pointing at it. good fucking quote though.

3 words. World Series Baseball.

[And yes, I know the real story behind that name and that it’s not really about ‘the world’, but I’m not going to let that stand in the way of a bad put down]

the delusional fuckers really thought they could win it all. they think that about everything which is why they force themselves into wars that are none of their fucking business, because they think theres a fucking medal at the end announcing theyre world champions of war. someone should tell them their recent record shows they wouldnt even make it on the fucking podium.

That might just be the best cultural takedown of America since John Pilger.

Comment by Rob

On the other hand, it’s the first time in the universe that America has been cast as the plucky underdog.

I did some work for an airline last year. The thing that really stood out (and you can see this in the two photographs above) was how smartly dressed people were back in the glorious days of travel.

So you can imagine how the hostesses feel when they see me boarding their gleaming jet. Poor sods.

Comment by Rob

Hiding the outward signs of your affluence. Intriguing.

Comment by John

They just shake their heads woefully at your dizzying decline into mid-life crisis.

Comment by Marcus

That makes it sound like I was once normal. Thank you Marcus, I take that as a massive compliment.

Comment by Rob

I was once upgraded to First Class, I still believe that’s a clerical error. Never have I had such an experience.
However, I fly so little I still retain an sense of genuine wonder from flying. The first time my little boy he was more excited than I would be flying in the Millennium Falcon. Sometimes I think airlines should make the most of this.
But then again I’m a Northern monkey, electricity is amazing to us.

Comment by Northern

I still love flying: that is to say the bit where I’m sat in the machine which then takes to the air. Everything around that is horrifying: check-in, baggage drop, security, etc etc – those bit’s are awful.

Comment by Marcus

I won’t comment anymore for reasons of self-protection.

Comment by Rob

Yes, it’s simply dreadful that they don’t delay takeoff for late arrivals any more.
