Everything Is A Medium …

I was at the doctors when, while waiting for my prescription, I saw this …

Now you may think it’s a magazine rack.

A simple, not very attractive, magazine rack that is holding a range of out-of-date periodicals.

A simple, not very attractive, magazine rack that is holding a range of out-of-date periodicals in the vicinity of a bunch of ill people who are waiting for their medicine to be passed to them so they can go home and have a cup of tea.

But you’d be wrong, because apparently it’s a highly targeted media vehicle, designed to appeal to Shanghai’s most affluent individuals.

And adfolk wonder why so many people think we’re a bunch of twats.

If completing a succesful diet regimen, it can one day be a medium.

Didn’t you have a job where you turned everyday objects into an ad channel?

Comment by DH

i only remember this because it was such a fucked up title. he was a “communications innovator” but now i think of it, he was at jwt so he probably fucking was by their standards.

Comment by andy@cynic

Yes I was … and as Andy scarily said, it was at JWT. I admit the title was a bit bollocks, but I wasn’t trying to make money from magazine racks in Doctors waiting rooms, in fact apart from a few fun things, I worked with the Russian space agency and helped broker the deal for Pepsi and Omega to advertise with the Mir Space Station. No, I can’t remember how it came about either.

What I do remember is I wrote it was testimony to Russian engineering that something that was supposed to only be there for a few years was still going strong … even though the reality was it was held together with sticky back plastic. Hahaha.

No wonder you’re living in China.

if anything is going to make sure the docs only sees really ill patients, its offering them the sort of magazine that makes you fucking sick.

Was that where he did the flattened cars for Jurassic Park? I liked that.

fucking creep.

That was a fun one. And we had an articulated lorry driving with a massive chained box on its back driving around cities.

The box said it was transporting a T-Rex and it made deafening noises when it stopped at traffic lights. We got fined for stopping traffic for that one. Ha.

Well they certainly found Shanghai’s most affluent communications innovator.

You left out the word ‘expat’. (I presume you’re at Shanghai United?)

Comment by Ian Gee

his private fucking surgeon. his sex change surgeon.

Comment by andy@cynic

Good point … though it was at Parkway, mainly because I’m too lazy to go all the way to Shanghai United.

The pot plant is a beacon, right?

Comment by Marcus

Classic piece of media arts, or it would be if it had a QR code I beacon in it, or an RFID tag that could diagnose your illness through your expression
Everything is media, do not forget
